Centre makes 'assurance' on Salem railway division
Thiruvananthapuram, March 8 (PTI): The Centre has assured the Kerala Government that it will reconsider the decision on forming the Salem Railway Division by bifurcating the state's Palakkad Division, state Law Minister M Vijayakumar informed the Assembly today.
The assurance was given by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad, Vijaykumar, the minister in-charge of railways, said while replying to a calling attention motion.
The formation of the new division headquartered at Salem in Tamil Nadu by bifurcating the Palakkad Division will be harmful to the development of railways in Kerala and this had been brought to the notice of both the prime minister and the railway minister, Vijayakumar said.
The Centre had also agreed to call a meeting of chief ministers of both states to discuss the matter, he said.
Raising the matter, K M Mani (KC-M) said the proposed Salem Division was against Kerala's interests and wanted the state government to take up the matter with the Centre.
