Hi,
Nice Site with good theme,Dr You Done a Good Job.
From

| Dr George Joseph Themplangad |
Let us all get involved and mobilize public opinion, so that Indian Railways and The Indian Govt will fund this crucial need in this years ( 2007-2008) railway budget, Stay involved and come up with ideas for action on the matter. best wishes George |
| Joseph Chacko |
Dr. George has a point. Over the period of many decades, I noticed that Indian Railways has made remarkable progress in making significant advancement in applying technology compared with many other government departments in India. But,improving sanitation in trains seems overlooked. Funds should not be a problem for such a massive establishment, I think. One of the gross thing I have seen is in the train station itself. While huge crowd waiting on platform, passengers inside the stopped train dump #1 and #2 in front of the crowd; same time food and beverage sold by vendors on the platform to passengers. Flys and bugs defenitely commute between the openly exposed food served to passengers and "intestine processed food-fortified with germs" lying on the rail track. I am sure Dr.George's appeal will be well responded by the respondents. If Indian Railways seek assistance from World Health Organization [WHO] for funds, I think there is a legitimate possibility to get finance (In case funds is an issue). Let us, Indians, be proud of our sophisticated railway system to be a model for the rest of the world not only on Hi-Tech but also for being clean and hygenic one. |
| Philip Alexander |
Dear Dr. Joseph, Point taken, and its about time someone took the lead on this. congratulations on this. It is about time that human excreta was treated before disposal as it is in all other parts of the world and arrangements made for this. I hope your movement spreads |
| thushara gamage |
it is a fantastic idea.i felt vomiting when i was landed at chennai central.such a beautiful idea.am sure government should support you |
| G RAGHUBALAN |
Hats off to you. Very relevant and i appreciate the fact that you have wanted to do this even after you are an NRI. We have been seeing the nuisance and have been compromising. This should definitely make the largest employer in the world wake up and realise that there are areas where the Indian railways is at the bottom |
| Mathukutty.K.J |
dear Dr. You are fighting for a good cause. Keep it up and please keep going |
| beegeez |
Doctor, Good work. Appreciate the efforts taken. Some1 has belled the cat, FINALLY!!!! We ALL wish this movement is a success. Best wishes |
| Kumar |
Wishing you all the very best. Good job friends. All the positive universal energies be with you guys in your work. Let the sleeping Indians wake up |
| Chennaite |
I would say even disposing shit on the tracks while the train is moving is fine. The worst part is people using the toilet when the train is in the station. It makes for some horrific viewing to other passengers who happen to cast their eyes on the tracks. Chennai central is the ideal example for this. Human excreta are showered all over the tracks and the stench is just unbearable. Shri LP Yadav must really take some serious action |
| Mathews Emmanuel |
Congrats for the attempt. At last some body smelled the shit in rails. I heared that you are an Indian doctor and determined to diaper the railways from the indian express. Proud of you. Assuring all helps to spread this message to as many as possible and to take possible steps |
| Tom J Manikathr |
George, You are on track. I pray that your efforts bear fruit and we get environmentally complying trains. Couple of weeks ago I DID READ that the railways are planning to implement sewage treatment units for the train toilets...... BRgds Tom |
| R. Sudhir Kumar |
Congragulations for having taken up a cause which people would think to live with it for ever. Yes public awareness has to be generated and the Railways need to make a small begininig to adopt latest waste disposal technology |
| Jain |
I am forwarding link to this site to all my E-mail buddies. let us give maximum publicity to this initiative |

I appritiate efforts to clean up railway lines . Hope compartments will be freee from an array of food sellers who constantly move up and down with anything from peanuts to idli and vada to tea and coffee and sweet meats and bread omlette. A continous flow of class 3 type of food at 5 star prices .The vendors and contractors graese the palm of railway official thanks to the most corrupt polititian heading the department. The travel weary passengers break their boredom by continuosly gobbing everything that come across and keeps chewing and drinking the hot noxious liquid which the vendors call coffee. Bihar is the most backward ,un hygenic ,underdevoloped and criminal state in india thanks to the management expert and his family who ruled the state for the longest period .However railway can be proud of being the department holding india together and making the best possible arrangement for low fare for bulk commutation. This deffinetly not because the present railway minister but because of graet men like lal bahadur shastri and some of the best managers india every had including sri e shridharan and others. Each compartment should be provided with tanks which can be evacuated in septic tanks constructed at sparingly populated specific locations these locations should be accessable to large trucks which should collect the material from the compartments at the shunting yards . Computers should be educated by printing message not to use lavatories while the train is stationary and not moving like stations , etc .Any attempt to improve hygene should start from teaching young children from kg level - upwards as old bundicoots will not change their habits like spitting , urinating and defecating in public.Wishes for all the success in your campaign |
| George Joseph Themplangad MD, MBA |
Thanks friends for your comments and notes. Let us all get involved and make this an accomplishment using Gandhiji's meathods of peaceful and yet firm action... Please come up with "Gandhigiri" ideas so that our politicians in India will wake up and smell the roses "****" on the railway tracks. Friends, please know this, "THE ONLY WAY POLIO IS SPREAD IS THROUGH THE SHIT ..... So Indian railways is directly responsible for the spread of polio and needs to act on the matter immieidietly. Freinds you may email me at indianevada@yahoo.com or info@railwayshit.com Keep up the good work |
| Kiran Chopra |
It's really so disgusting to see indian railway tracks!!! Dr, it's a very good initiative. We need to force the government to find a good alternative for the waste management |
| joe vivera |
Could every one please write to the president of India, Prime Minister, UPA chairman, chief justice and most important, to Sri Laloo himself about this stinking issue? Write to all Delhi news papers as well. Our Mandarins in Delhi read only Delhi News papers. If you know to write in Hindi, well all more better |
| Dr.A.Kannan |
Wish you all the best, this will surely bring a revolution in Indian railways |
| Jose vikas yesudasan |
First of all, i would like to appreciate your initiative. I agree with your claim |
| Larry Warnberg |
Good work George. Hope you survive the inevitable challenge to your legal standing. Perhaps some of the Indian commenters will offer to co-sign, improving the petitioner standing. Someone suggested conveniently spaced septic systems to receive the waste discharge from holding tanks on the cars. Why not recycle all that valuable human excreta and food scraps through composting facilities, or a methane digester? Recycling could pay for the process, replacing a polluting wasteful practice with a sustainable economical system. Alternatively, Larry www.solartoilet.com |

i fell very pitty on this matter. so i am pleadge the government "TO TAKE A NECESSARY ACTION AGAINST IT" |

i heard about this project from INDIAN EXPRESS newspaper.its a wonderful initiative.i had thought about this problem several times but didnt have the courage to come up and fight for such a noble cause.as others have commented, its high time tthat railways imrove the sanitation drive.i appreciate the effort taken by Dr.George Joseph bring such a problem into light. The Publicity from the Rajagiri school of social sciences in this regard is worth praising.I will give maximum publicity to this initiative and would indeed offer all my support for it |
| Meghana T |
Dr, Indeed a very commendable initiative. Hope we can force our railways to find a good alternative for this problem |
| Rejoice |
Good move... I have always wondered y can't they be hygenic and remove the waste?? |
| Jahleah Selassie-Aird |
Great site, Dr. G!!! You are doing an EXCELLENT job and I support you 100%!!! Keep up the good works and I pray that you succeed in your endeavours to clean up the railways and that you gain all the support that you need to do so. Peace and Blessings, Jahleah |

This is the 21 century.. high time the railways grew out of the 19th century..Thank you for your efforts |
| Abhilasha Wadhwa |
High time Laloo Yadav's tall claims, which he made on his first day of appointment as the Railway Minister, to bring 'vaccuum pressured toilets like the airplanes' are put into action. |
| Pranay Ranka |
its good someone has come up to fight the system... i am doing my design thesis on hygiene on Indian Railways, as i want to see the change in what should be the greates rail network of the world!! |
| Latha |
Dear Dr.G!!, Welldone.. Hope we, our children and grandchildren enjoy the fruit of our fight. The Indian railways have under gone a tremendous growth under the current ministry and hope a revoulution happens in the way sanitation is handled. India is becoming to threat to neighbouring countries in its growth in IT and Telecom industry ..and such issues are still a shame on us. Every true Indian will appreciate your thought and support your case .. Latha |
| Jacob Kochummen |
GIt is about time that somone is taking the initiative and courage. We will support your effort. Good Job! |
| Vinson Xavier Palathingal |
Dr. George, all the best wishes in this fight. This is a real issue and thanks so much for taking it up for all of us!! Best regards Vinson |
| Yagnesh Desai |
The Shit will anyway have to be dumped somewhere. Why not have a good business case of Sewage treatment and generating Electricity. . ? A win-win situation for both the parties |
| T.D. Raphi |
Indeed a great effort doctor.I read about your initiative in India Today Magazine.I am working in G ovt.secretariat,Trivandrum and a daily commuter by train between Kollam and Trivandrum.I often see people using lavatory when train is stationary at stations.I think not only strict punishment but awareness of public is also essential to put an end of this menace.Wish you all success in this noble cause |
| Johny Varghese : Alleppey |
Good move from our side. Actually u opend our eyes , we are also using the toilet but till today we didn't think about this. From Ist A/c to General compartment , all are using this . Hope Indian rail way will change |

| Praveer Chakravorty |
You are fighting for great cause...I extend all my support for this shit being spread all over the country by IR |
| Madhava Menon |
YThe action taken by you is really commendable and addresses a felt need. It does not appear from today’s report on the Rail budget that the ministry had taken note of this or desires to do something. Whilst on this there are two other areas related to this that need to be addressed. One is the propensity for the general public, e.g. slum dwellers in Mumbai, to use the tracks for their needs because of woefully inadequate arrangements available in slums for sufficient number of toilets. Even the ones that are there are not well maintained. This also compels women particularly into answering nature’s call in such public places at the dead of the night. Another related factor to be considered is the pollution of all water bodies like lakes, rivers and the beaches because of the practice of pushing untreated human, animal and other waste into the sea often untreated. This not only plays havoc with the marine eco systems but also increases tremendously the risk of disease through water-borne diseases and consumption of seafood. Chacko Verghese from the US, who is involved in social infrastructure had initially come during President Clinton's visit to India to establish Medical waste management. Through his efforts GJ Multiclave ( India) Pvt Ltd, has established centralized facilities in AP, Tamilnadu and Kerala to manage Medical waste. Last December he was again in India representing a US company "ECOSOLIDS" ; www.ecosolids.com that has developed and implemented the technology in US and Europe for sewage sludge management. This process is stated to be the most cost effective technology in the industry for producing a pathogen-free, dry, organic biosolids that can be used as a lime replacement and soil enhancement medium. This technology can be very easily applied to the railway system, however public awareness for clean environment needs to be built up. While some voices are being raised, as of now, not many people are sufficiently galvanised into taking the required steps….this PIL should go a long way in addressing this need. |
| Anil Madan |
My friend Chacko Verghese sent me a link to your site. This is a terrific idea in public interest litigation. Out of curiosity, since you are the only Petitioner and a non-resident, I take it that a motion to dismiss for lack of standing, etc. will be or has been made. It would seem to me to prudent to have at least one co-Petitioner who is a resident of India. I'm sure there is no lack of volunteers and the Complaint can be amended even at this time (not sure of this, but in general, amendments to pleadings are common in the US and, I suspect, in India too). Is there a plan to keep the site updated on the progress of the litigation, with copies of responses and motions and discovery materials from all parties? Thanks and good luck |
| Dr George Joseph Themplangad |
Thanks to those who have responded. Obviously Indian Railways has shown us the public the finger, in this budget, by not allocating any serious funds towards this extremly unhealthy disease propagating tragedy of dumping feacal matter all over the country. This website will be updated with details of court developments, and let me inform everyone that the Indian Railways in their response has shown a very callous and negligent response in court, by claiming that their actions are not at all causing any danger to anyone's health. FREINDS< GET INVOLVED> MAKE YOUR FIRM OPINIONS FELT Sincerely, Dr. George Joseph Themplangad |
| Sheela George |
Dear Mr. Joseph, I congratulate you for taking such a brave initiative to file a petition against the Union of India. It is about time for "India, the future super power" to do something to cleanup the railways, streets, open sewages etc and make us proud of our country. All the Kudos for you !! |
| Nicholas Horsburgh |
About time! A brilliant initiative! I wish you every success with it. I recently asked a friend what the best way was to travel from Bangalore to Kottayam (I am attending his son's wedding in July). He advised me to fly rather than take the train because the overnight train only gets into Kottayam after 11 a.m., and he said "that's a long time to wait before taking a comfortable crap"! Indian Railways did away with 3rd class compartments many years ago; unfortunately this did not extend to the toilets; they are still very much third class, or worse. I feel for the millions of people all over India who have no alternative but to cross the tracks every day; it must be a disgusting experience for them. And the people living beside the tracks express their feelings about the railways by using those same tracks as a grand toilet! Good luck. I am sure you will succeed in getting some action |
| Shinaj Vinodan |
Obviously a right thought!! If the authorities doesnt open their eyes, then its our turn. This case will be backed by millions... |
| K. Cook |
6 years ago I travelled quite extensively by train. I have had experience of the toilets on these trains, and made sure that I would not need to use these facilities. However, at Bangalore station, the toilets in the waiting rooms, even first class where I had to obtain a key to enter, were disgusting. I took a taxi to a big hotel where I was able to relieve myself in hygienic and comfortable condition. As I write I can still envisage the stench and filth I experienced. As I expect to be travelling on trains during my next visit to India in 2008 I sincerely wish your actions Dr.Joseph every success and toilet facilities on trains and stations are upgraded 1000% |
| Mohan Nair |
Dr. George Joseph was my senior in boarding school. He is a toughie, a mountaineer and will not give up easily. Now I propose addressing this issue from a solutions angle. It should be low cost, environment friendly and low tech. Non-chemical I suppose??? We have many engineers/waste mangement specialists in India and abroad am sure. Once somebody sent me an e-mail of a petition from a bengali gentleman who ate much jackfruit in the 1850's and suffered on a train as a result as there were no toilets!!Its after that incident that IR introduced toilets in the first place. I believe this letter is kept in the Railways Museaum. It makes hilarious reading. For a cleaner India! If management students from Wharton and Harvard come to talk to our Hon'ble Minister then I am sure he can find a solution real quick if he puts his mind to the job. Lets help the Minister with sensible solutions!! |
| Manapurathu V. Mathew, M.D |
Dr. Joseph you have done a great service for the railway travelers and others in Kerala and India.how can a govt. has such total disregard for it's people. keep up the good work and I hope this huge problem gets solved |
| Ashok NR |
Dr. George, This is something that should have been done a long time ago. I wish this PIL gains national importance. Also the fact that this is one of the highlighted modes of transport within India to the world makes it doubly worse. |
| Rajesh Vallabhaneni |
SHUT THE SHIT....INDIAN RAILWAYS.....YOU HAVE BEEN SHITTING ALL THE WAY FOR A VERY LONG TIME !!!!! LALOOJI.....THIS HAS TO BE DONE IN YOUR TENEURE..... BADBOO...BAAND.. KEJIYE !!!! SAAF AUR SUNDER SANDAAS KA RIBBON KATIYE....THANKS IN ADVANCE !! |
| shanibpk |
hi, its a good job, best of luck |
| Binu |
Dr.Gud Work..Congratulations!! |
| G Venkata Subramanain |
Sir, This is a serious issue. You have shown the youth that the people are still in control of democracy by filing a case against the authority of a government office. You can expect my full support for this. |
| vinit |
Hi, I need some more time to read all these. Anyway you have done a wonderful job. |
| Nita Jatar Kulkarni |
It is a very good initiative and I hope something comes out of this. Usually we are so apathetic about dirt and shit on the roads, so I guess we tend to ignore it on the rail track. Sorry to sound cynical, but as I am not an admirer of Laloo I doubt whether anything will happen during his time. I am sure he thinks that there are more important matters to be solved, like making more money...er, I mean for the railways ofcourse. We have to start cleaning up our roads, our cities, our rail tracks. What the solutions are, I am not sure. |
| George Joseph Themplangad |
Please take a look at the website, as it has got more current information and is being upgraded. This is a matter on which we have to get united and determined about. The health of India depends on it. It is a major health hazard with severe consequences...we must awake and act... George |
| Kenney Jacob |
Railways defenitely needs a new face.... |
| Ram Mohan Nair |
Great work Doc.The shit sure hit the railwaytrack!!!!!!!Can someone suggest to the railmantri a scientifically and economically viable initiative in this regard. He certainly is aware of this but in order of priority (workwise) it really does not figure in his scheme of things. After all raking up shit wont get you to lecture at Harvard. Raking up big bucks will.Great amount of initiative shown by Dr George. AM SURE SOME SCIENTEST WILL COME UP WITH A CHEAP SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM |
| Jahleah Selassie |
Namaste, Dr. G!!! Just a few words to let you know that I checked the site and that I support your efforts 100%!!! My prayers remain with you in your endeavours to clean up the railways for the people of India who need both reliable transportation and a healthy living environment as well. You obviously have a LOT of supporters out there and I know that everything will work out for the BEST! It is time for us to be an active part of the SOLUTION to the problems that some humans have created for others here on Earth. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK and I pray that you are able to get to India in the VERY near future. Where there is a will, there is a way! Much Respect and Admiration, Jahleah Selassie |
| Seran |
Hi, The shit processing can be done more efficiently. Use pipes ans store it in some place and cleanup in every station/alternate stations, instead of opening it into the tracks. |
| Bro.John Berchmans |
Congrats,Dr.Gorge.Thanks for the efforts taken.Let us Hope for the best.Matters will improve |
| Anil,P |
Indian Railway is still in Stone Ages. There is no Facilities commensurating with its volume of operations, They still show Green Flags in the Age of BLUETOOTH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we have to raise voice ........... JAI HIND |
| Dr Kumar |
Everyday the color blineded Inidan media praising the the corrupted railway minister like anything. This is BS. Any Indian with pride and hygiene has to raise the finger about this nasty practice of the Indian railway. Let them and the 'honorable' minister come to the reality of this shit splashing all over India. Railway should stop immediately this unhygienic practice for ever. |
| Dr Anitha |
It is most humbly further submitted that the discharge of human excreta into the open environment from the toilets of trains in India is least with the intention to spread diseases throughout the length and breadth of the nation. Majority of Indians are below poverty line. So minimal input = minimal output ! Passengers are requested through notices in train toilets to avoid using toilets at stations. Railway don't care about the literacy rate of India in general ! clearing of nightsoil by washing into side drains and its subsequent discharge away from stations Is lying is a crime ! |
| Sam Markose |
THANK GOD !!! Air-Inida and Indian-Airlines don't practice the same !!! |
| davis |
V good initiative,hi time this problemneeds to be addressed.Dont we have technoligical developnment to tackle .Or is it the lethargy of the autorities not to improve the facility/cleaniness.. |
| George Joseph Themplangad |
Friends, There has been great interest and mommentum on the cause of public health. Attendig the Inidian Institue of Science and IIT alumni events in San Jose / Santa Clara here in Silicon Valley by San Francisco, has helped get the urgent and important message accross to many key people. Await and watch for new initiatives and events. Please stay involved. be well... July 17..2007.. we have come a long way already... Amazing...Today is a decade since I learnt what it means to deal with the eventuality of **** hitting the fan... Let us get on with the task...folks.. thanks a million for your support and interest.. The work has just begun.. a lot of **** needs to be cleaned up.. in the world...let us start with Indian railwaysHit... |
| Jose Philip |
You have taken a positive step about one of the many things we need to improve on. Congratulations. These days we see how nature reacts when we do not practice hygiene - by the viral fever, chikungunia epidemic. I hope these epidemic will serve as eye opener us all, to practice more hygiene. Another system which require diapers is the hospitals - many are rather distribution centres for diseases. Staff are not at all aware of basic hygiene. Good luck with the step you have already taken. Having no other option, sorry that I have contributed a few times to the heap railwayshit:) |
| George Joseph Themplangad |
Will start doing some reporting on this forum, from now on. GE is forming a strategic alliance with Indian Railways to build wagons and coaches. Well, better get it done soon, and fix the **** issue or we will have to add GE as well to the public health litigation. GE was stone walling clean up efforts on The Hudson River for years - waste that they dumped on to the river.. that refused to clean up. Now they are partnering Indian Railways ..makes a pefect combination. I am not kidding. I also acknowledge they are both IR and GE big organizations and have the resource, talent, money - so please stop dumping shit on railway tracks.. it is causing disease.. PLEASE do it.. or ask us how to fix it, we have some ideas for you and suggestions and volunteers.. |
| George Joseph Themplangad |
Folks, we do have a new blog... do please go to http://railsHit.blogspot.com maybe you dont need the capitalized H...See you there on the blog ... Let us get this problem solved !! |
| michael |
Yes George. These changes must be handed up to the higher powers by courageous people like yourself. I applaud your effort and will hold to your '1000 people' theory and add my energy to the prayer and energy of CHANGE! Bravo my brother! |
